Student-musicians have a new avenue to showcase their musical talents thanks to the formation of the New Hyde Park-Garden City Park School District’s first Chamber Orchestra.

The Chamber Orchestra was initiated to provide talented and eager string students in the district’s existing orchestra program the opportunity to rehearse and perform together. The group of 36 students were selected by audition last October and includes students from all four elementary schools. The ensemble’s debut performance was at the board of education meeting on March 11 in celebration of Music in Our Schools Month.

The group will be heading to the New York State School Music Association Majors festival in Mineola on May 16. NYSSMA Majors is an ensemble festival in which groups from various schools in the area perform for a panel of adjudicators and receive a rating. The students are working hard and are very, very excited to participate. The ensemble’s program includes three works: “Clog Dance,” “Hunter’s Chorus” and “Impulse.”

Rehearsals for the group began after the audition results were decided in October. The students rehearse each Thursday afternoon at Hillside Grade School.
