Northwell Health’s Stern Family Center for Rehabilitation in Manhasset has been ranked among the nation’s best, according to Newsweek’s Best Nursing Homes 2021 report.
Recently released data rates Stern as one of the top 400 facilities out of 15,000 nursing homes nationwide to make the list, which places it among the top 3 percent of skilled nursing facilities in the country.
Newsweek’s report provides important guidance to families and medical providers caring for people in need of a nursing home. There are more than 47 million Americans age 65 and older and the number is growing, Newsweek found. By 2030, the 65-plus demographic will account for more than 20 percent of the population and studies indicate that two-thirds of them will need some type of long-term care.
To determine its nursing home rankings, Newsweek teamed with the global data research firm Statista Inc., which analyzed 15,000 nursing homes in the United States and recognized award winners across 20 states. A score was calculated for each nursing home based on recommendations from medical experts and nursing home performance based on the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). This year, facilities were reviewed in how they handled the threat of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

Despite significant challenges faced by nursing facilities and hospitals in the U.S. during the current pandemic, the Stern Center and Orzac Center for Rehabilitation in Valley Stream recently earned a high-performing rating for its short-term rehabilitation programs by U.S. News & World Report’s Best Nursing Homes 2020-2021 report. US News’ evaluation of nursing homes is based on data from Nursing Home Compare, a consumer website run by CMS Nursing Homes. Facilities earn an overall rating between one to five stars based on the following categories: health inspections, nurse staffing and quality of care. Both Stern and Orzac achieved a five-star rating by CMS on Nursing Home Compare.
