One of three Great Neck Library election races contested

The Island Now

With the terms of  two seats on the Great Neck Library’s Board of Trustees and one seat on its Nominating Committee ending this year, October’s election will bring one contested trustee race.
An incumbent trustee, Varda Solomon, is set to face off on Oct. 31 with Doug Hwee for Solomon’s expiring trustee seat.
Another incumbent trustee, Josie Pizer, whose term is expiring at the end of this year, will not be running for re-election.
Instead, Rebecca Miller will be running uncontested to fill Pizer’s seat.
Great Neck Library Board President Marietta DiCamillo said Pizer has served diligently on the board to complete all of the goals she set when she was first elected and is now moving on.
Efforts to reach Solomon, Hwee and Pizer for comment were unavailing.
Seats on the Board of Trustees are for four-year terms beginning January 2017.
Patrick McDonnell is running unopposed for outgoing Nominating Committee member Michael Katz’s expiring trustee seat.
Holly Coscetta, the administrative assistant to the library director, Kathy Giotsas, said candidates cannot run for consecutive terms on the Nominating Committee.
Efforts to reach McDonnell were unavailing.
The Nominating Committee seat is for a three-year term beginning January 2017.
In July, the Nominating Committee endorsed Solomon, Miller and McDonnell for the three open seats.
The deadline for independent nomination petitions for the three open seats was Aug. 15.
Candidates interested in running needed to get 100 signatures from Great Neck Library card holders in order to submit a petition, Coscetta said.
Library officials said to vote in the Oct. 31 election, voters must be at least 18 years old and either be registered with the Nassau County Board of Elections or a Great Neck Library cardholder.
Biographical information for the candidates, library officials said, would be available in the September-December library newsletter.
