Readers Write: Tell us why impeachment would trigger armed rebellion

The Island Now

Letter writer John Messina made several intriguing statements in his published “look into the future” in the last edition of the paper. The first was that if a successful presidential impeachment occurs, “the result will be an armed rebellion…that will make the Civil War look like a tea party.” The second alternative future possibility was that “the African-American community…will recognize that Trump…is a businessman who is looking out for America…and [that they] will lead President Trump to another four years in the Oval Office.”

So far, polling among African-Americans has indicated no groundswell of affection for nor support of the present occupant of the White House. But I have only the efforts of scientifically organized and conducted polls to lead me to my conclusion. And polls have certainly been wrong in the past, so I freely grant the possibility that I may be wrong.

Although the claim about massive support for Mr. Trump among the black community seems unlikely, the first of Mr. Messina’s predictions is a bit more disturbing. It is unclear from the context if the gentleman would actively support that “armed rebellion” is merely imagining a possible future outcome among disaffected MAGA supporters, faced with a constitutionally conducted inquiry, trial and conviction that came out less than favorably for Mr. Trump.

If, especially in the light of, but certainly not limited to, the published results of the Mueller Report, Mr. Messina could explain the rationale of said armed rebellion, it would be a service to the readers of this publication if he could specify such reasons. I freely admit that I would like to see an impeachment inquiry begun in the House Judiciary Committee, and carried out in constitutionally mandated fashion. But perhaps I am as mistaken in this as I am in my belief that African-Americans will not overwhelmingly support Mr. Trump. I ask Mr. Messina to educate me, and other readers of this newspaper, why an armed rebellion would follow impeachment.
