The Island Now

Robert Ludlow Harding Jr., who owned Harding Real Estate in Port Washington and was a fixture and philanthropist in the community, died on Sunday. He was 79.

Harding was a member of the Port Washington Chamber of Commerce for 42 years, and  its executive director, Bobbie Polay, said he was very involved in the Port Washington community.

“Bob Harding was a man who, if you needed something done, would get it done,” added Warren Schein,  Chamber of Commerce co-president. “He didn’t know the meaning of no and he knew that anything could be done.”

Schein said that when he was involved in the Port Singers, a musical group, and the group needed funding, Harding made a donation to keep the group alive without hesitation.

“That’s the type of man he was,” Schein said. “He was a loving, caring man, who was a tremendous friend. He loved Port Washington and the community.”

Harding is survived by his wife, Jane; his children, Scott, Brent and Stacy; and his grandchildren, Allison, Kyle, Ryan, Mary Jane, Riley and Grace.

Visitation will be held on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Fairchild Funeral Home, 1570 Northern Blvd. in Manhasset.

The funeral will be at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday at Port Washington United Methodist Church at 35 Middle Neck Road.
