Schreiber musicians honored

Two Paul D. Schreiber High School students will perform at the New York School Music Association Winter Conference in December.

Andrew Lu and Solbi Oh, both violinists, were selected to represent the district, a news release said.

Elizabeth Bain, a soprano, will attend the conference as an alternate.

“Congratulations to our students and the music teachers who have worked with them to achieve this honor,” said Kevin Scully, the district’s director of creative arts. “We are grateful to the Board of Education, administration and community members whose support helped make these accomplishments possible.”

The release said that thousands of students auditioned last spring at solo and ensemble festivals in New York State. Students were chosen based on their proficiency scores at the festivals and on teacher recommendations, the release added.

The New York State School Music Association, according to the release, “is one of the largest and most successful music organizations in the country.”

The three Port Washington students are part of 4,000 students selected to participate in the winter conference, the release said.

“Many high schools in New York State go years without any all-state participants,” said Superintendent of Schools Kathleen Mooney. “It is a tremendous honor that we have multiple students representing Port Washington”

The conference will run from Dec. 1 to 4 at the Rochester Convention Center in Rochester.

Jordan Lerner, last year’s all-state selection from the district, cannot participate in the winter conference because he was chosen to perform with the National Association for Music Education’s 2016 All-National Jazz ensemble.
