The state Department of Education honored Paul D. Schreiber High School for its academic performance and growth, naming it a Reward School for the 2016-17 school year.
The honor, according to a news release, is given to schools that perform well academically and show growth over a number of years based on proficiency levels.
“One of our ongoing goals at Schreiber is to reduce the achievement gap for our students,” said the principal, Ira Pernick.
The award takes into account scores from required math and English exams and Regents exams as well as graduation rates.
“Reward schools also demonstrate improvement wherever any gaps in student achievement occur,” the release said.
Schreiber’s test scores in 2013-14 and 2014-15 for the state English language arts and math last year qualified it for the distinction of “High Performing School,” the release said.
“We have a diverse student population and we are immensely proud of this,” Pernick said. “We take great pride in providing all of our students with a high-quality education. This acknowledgment from the State of New York underscores the success of our efforts.”
The release said that the Schreiber achieved the state’s measure for adequate progress throughout the year.
“The Reward School distinction is an important, yet sometimes overlooked honor that recognizes a school’s commitment to helping students achieve at a high level, regardless of the challenges they face,” said Superintendent of Schools Kathleen Mooney. “This is not the first time Schreiber High School has received the Reward School honor. Congratulations to Principal Pernick and his staff for their commitment to ensuring that every child that comes through their doors is in a position to succeed.”
