Sewanhaka art students honor heroes

The Island Now

Sewanhaka High School art students took part in an enlightening day on Jan. 31 when they honored local heroes to be featured in a Portraits of Heroes Among Us project.

Inspired by George W. Bush’s book “Portraits of Courage,” Mrs. Kerschman’s Drawing and Painting students and Mrs. Filippone’s Advanced Photographic Arts students met and spoke with detectives and police officers from the 105th Precinct; veterans; members of the Navy and Army; and former Marines, some of whom are part of the Sewanhaka High School security staff.

Students photographed the volunteers in a studio setting, from which Drawing and Painting students will create detailed portraits.
