Sewanhaka High School science teacher Yvonne Sherwood was named Teacher of the Month for October.

Ms. Sherwood is the adviser of the school’s Green Club, which participates in many activities such as recycling, fundraising and cleaning the school’s grounds. Green Club members can always be found after school on Thursdays going into classes to collect bottles and cans, which are redeemed at Key Food. The money collected is donated to a variety of fundraisers throughout the year. They regularly landscape the Sewanhaka courtyard, help to maintain the pond, have landscaped the Reflection Triangle, the front lawn and the large flowerbed around the flagpole. Ms. Sherwood and Green Club members travel to Hempstead Lake State Park every year to participate in the International Beach Cleanup.

Ms. Sherwood is Sewanhaka’s lead earth science teacher, and goes above and beyond to help her students. They are always well prepared to take the earth science Regents exam at the end of the year. Ms. Sherwood is always attempting new and different techniques to help students understand the abstract concepts of earth science. She is available for extra help every day before and after school, and keeps in close contact with parents to keep them apprised of their child’s progress. She is always assisting in clearing the hallways after the bell rings. Her great and imaginative work in setting up the two science showcases on the third floor throughout the year is greatly appreciated.
