Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas hosted the NCDA’s Second Annual Labor Law Conference at The Morrelly Center in Bethpage on Tuesday.
The conference gathered labor leaders, high-ranking elected officials and law enforcement agencies to share information and examine evolving trends that impact the labor community.
“When unscrupulous employers cheat in one aspect, they often cheat in everything,” Singas said. “It starts with stealing hard earned wages from their employees, and then evolves into submitting false payroll records, false tax returns and cheating the unemployment insurance system. Our Labor Unit is committed to holding accountable those employers who shortchange their employees and stiff the taxpayers.”
The NCDA’s Labor Unit was established in 2006 and investigates and prosecutes employers who violate prevailing wage, minimum wage and overtime laws.
Since 2006, the unit has recovered more than $3.8 Million in restitution for workers, has a 100% conviction rate and has secured more than 35 debarments.
In late 2017, the NCDA partnered with the five District Attorney’s offices in New York City, the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office, the Attorney General’s Office, the New York State Department of Labor and the Department of Investigation to investigate wage theft in the construction industry.
