First-grade students in Christina Sciarrotto’s class at Manor Oaks School in the New Hyde Park-Garden City Park School District used Google Classroom to test their knowledge of short vowel sounds during a recent visit to the school’s computer lab.

The class has been studying short vowels sounds as part of the English language arts curriculum. During their unit study, the first-graders have used magnetic letters to create words, sorted pictures based on the sounds of the words they represented and used their fingers to tap out the syllables in words. Students then demonstrated what they learned using Google Classroom, where they identified matching pictures that had a short “a” vowel sound.

According to Ms. Sciarrotto, the district’s decision to use Google Classroom this year has boosted learning, as teachers can now see how a child is progressing in real time. It also streamlines the grading process and gives teachers an opportunity to share files easily with the students. Parents also have access to their child’s Google Classroom so they can review assignments and gain a better understanding of classroom learning.
