This Sunday the Manhasset community will mark the 15th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks with a ceremony honoring residents who were lost.
The observance will be held by the Town of North Hempstead at 8 a.m. at Mary Jane Davies Green, across from Town Hall on Plandome Road in Manhasset.
“During this memorial service, we gather as a community to honor and recognize those who lost their lives 15 years ago, including the 56 individuals from our North Hempstead family,” North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth said.
Of the hundreds of people killed, 13 were Manhasset residents.
“The ceremony serves to provide all who endured the tragedy of September 11 an opportunity to reflect upon its impact and remember those we lost that day,” town Clerk Wayne Wink said.
North Hills Mayor Marvin Natiss said 15 years later, the event is still very significant in his mind. He attended the town’s memorial service in past years and he said it is a moving experience.
“It’s a time for everyone to remember and I think the Town of North Hempstead does a very nice job,” Natiss said.
Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano will also host a sunset memorial service at the county’s 9/11 Memorial in Eisenhower Park in East Meadow at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 8. The names of county residents who died in the attacks will be read by family members during the candlelight service.
“The passage of time does not diminish the tragedy that our nation suffered 15 years ago,” Mangano said. “As we prepare to observe a national day of remembrance on September 11, it is imperative that we commemorate this day by reflecting and honoring those we lost that tragic morning and the bravery and heroism shown by first responders and our service men and women who continue to make sacrifices to secure our freedom and safety.”
