Two North Shore residents elected as county Family Court judges

Two North Shore residents, Ellen Greenberg and Conrad Singer, won re-election in last week’s Nassau County Family Court judge elections.
Greenberg, of Roslyn, received the second-highest number of votes in the race against seven other people for four seats to serve as Family Court judge in Nassau County, garnering 13.06 percent of ballots cast, or 265,990 votes.
“I’m thrilled to continue the work I do here for residents of Nassau County,helping families in crisis and helping children,” she said.
Greenberg ran as a Democrat but also appeared on the ballot lines for the Green Party, Working Families Party and Women’s Equality Party.
The coming term will be her second as a Family Court judge.
Before joining the court, she served as borough chief of the Bronx County Family Court, where she worked until 2006.
Family Courts do not have juries, meaning the judge determines the outcome of a dispute. The term of a Family Court judge lasts 10 years.
“I’ll be looking out for the best interests of families and children,” she said. “That’s what I’ll do and that’s what I’ve been doing.”
Singer, of Great Neck Plaza, received 257,709 total votes, or 12.66 percent, which was the third-highest number of votes in the race, to win his second term as Family Court judge.
He ran on the Democratic, Reform, Women’s Equality, Green and Working Families party lines.
Efforts to reach Singer for comment were unavailing.
He has served as a county Family Court judge since January 2007 and is also an acting New York State Supreme Court justice.
Singer served as the Great Neck Plaza village justice from 2000 until 2006.
According to Newsday, he was the managing attorney of his law office in Great Neck from 1995 until 2006.
Singer received the 2013 New York State Family Court Judge of the Year award, according to his campaign website.
He is currently serving his third term as president of the New York State Family Court Judges Association and is also the deputy presiding member of the judiciary section of the New York State Bar Association.
Singer has been a member of the Great Neck Vigilant Fire Department since 1980, and served as chief of the department from 2000 to 2004.
The remaining two county Family Court seats were won by Democrats Stacy Bennett, who received the most total votes, 273,026, and Ayesha Keri Brantley, who won the last seat over Republican Eileen C. Daly-Sapraicone by 142 votes.
The other three candidates who lost the election were Republicans Virginia Clavin-Higgins, Darlene Harris and Martin Massell, who received 247,459, 246,527 and 241,362 votes respectively.
