Owner Peter Hewitson created a restaurant with an atmosphere that’s warm, welcoming, casual and lively. Decorated with white subway tiles, red and white checkered tablecloths and a room that simulates an outdoor courtyard on a fisherman’s wharf, Uncle Bacala’s has lots of charm. Off to one side is a long granite bar, in the back is an open kitchen with a brick oven and there’s a spacious party room. French doors open up to the street on balmy days.

The menu is extensive but we ordered from the list of specials. Tuscan Onion Soup was rich and savory with a crisp pastry top; Crab Cake was all crabmeat and all flavor; Sauteed tilapia with pine nuts & craisins was a wonderful combination of ingredients; and tender Chicken Francese was accompanied with roasted potatoes and savory vegetables. The wine choices are global with many available by the glass. For dessert we delighted in every luscious bite of waffles with roasted bananas and vanilla ice cream.

Peter is a very accommodating host and goes the extra mile to take care of his customers. At the end of the meal , after coffee and dessert, you get pink cotton candy. That puts a smile on everyone’s face.

Bring the family and enjoy familiar Italian favorites or have a romantic dinner. Uncle Bacala’s is an upbeat restaurant – it’s a “feel good place.”
