A Target scheduled to take over the space in the Lake Success Shopping Center, formerly occupied by Sears, plans to expand their store dimensions, according to a spokesperson from the company.

The store, which was originally planned to be around 70,000 square feet, occupying two levels, now plans to occupy all three floors of the building, expanding to around 115,000 square feet, the spokesperson confirmed in an email to Blank Slate Media on Thursday.

“We’re excited to bring an easy, safe and convenient shopping experience to new guests in the community with this new Target store,” the spokesperson said.

Sears closed its doors at the shopping center located at 1400 Union Turnpike in 2018, joining 45 other locations and 13 additional KMart stores nationwide.

Typically, the average Target occupies around 130,000 square feet, according to company officials.

According to the plans submitted to the Town of North Hempstead’s Board of Zoning Appeals last year by the shopping center’s landlord, Lake Success Shopping Center LLC, the Target would include groceries, retail, a Starbucks and a CVS Pharmacy, the layout of most stores in Nassau County.

Aside from traditional full-format stores, the company also has more than 150 small-format stores nationwide as of August, according to its website. The spokesperson did not confirm when the store would open or what specific features would be included within it.

“As we get closer to opening the store, we’ll have more specific details to share – including how the shopping experience will be tailored to serve local guests and the grand opening date,” the spokesperson said.

Brian Schuster, vice chairman of Ripco Real Estate LLC, the real estate firm representing the owners of the shopping center in the matter, told Newsday that the store will not open before year’s end.

“It definitely will not open in 2021, but we’re hopeful it could open in late 2022,” Schuster told Newsday.

Efforts to reach Schuster for further comment on the matter were unavailing.

Schuster also told Newsday that Ripco is currently in lease negotiations with “a few other potential tenants”, but did not disclose names since the contracts were not yet finalized.

The three closest Target locations are in Port Washington North, Elmont and Garden City.
