Walt Bogdanich delights Reach Out America crowd in Manhasset

Three-time Pulitzer prizewinning investigative journalist Walt Bogdanich informed, amused and delighted the assembled at Reach Out America’s May meeting at Veatch House on the campus of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock in Manhasset.

He explained how he finds a story, follows it with detective work and turns it into exciting prose. He regaled the enthusiastic crowd with stories of covering tobacco-industry mendacity, thoroughbred racehorse drugging, campus rape and other experiences over the course of a 40-year career at The Wall Street Journal, 60 Minutes, ABC News and the New York Times.

He was sued for 10 billion dollars, had his life threatened, and in general took risks challenging powerful institutions for the purpose of protecting the general welfare, often succeeding in changing policy in the process.

Although he has not been involved in the recent journalistic investigations looking into possible political corruption in the current White House, he staunchly praised the integrity of the reporters at the New York Times and the Washington Post whose work he feels, is our first line of defense of this democracy.

On June 13, ROA hosts its paid up membership luncheon at Veatch House with guest speaker Reverend Natalie Fenimore.
