Tai Chi facilitated by Joseph Panico at Main

Tai Chi classes will be held on Saturdays, June 2, 9, and 16 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Community Room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue.

Registration fee is $40 for the entire series of eight classes. In-person registration only (cash, check or money order made payable to Great Neck Library).

Tai Chi is an internal form of martial art that is practiced for health and self- defense. Please wear comfortable clothes and shoes.

Joseph Panico has been practicing martial arts for more than 15 years. He began his Tai Chi training in 1997 at Red Dragon Kung Fu Center.

Performance Poets Association Readings at Station

Join George Pafitis when he hosts Performance Poets Association Readings on Saturday, June 2 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Station Branch, 26 Great Neck Road (second level), Gardens at Great Neck Plaza, above Best Market.

This is a monthly Open Mic forum in collaboration with the Performance Poets Association. Participate in reading your own work and/or listen and support others. A featured poet will read for 20 minutes at each session, followed by an open-mic.

Performance Poets Association is a non-profit organization that provides a forum for local artists and brings original poetry and related arts to the public.

Ted Rosenthal World Class Jazz Trio at Main

Enjoy the Ted Rosenthal World Class Jazz Trio on Sunday, June 3 at 2:30 p.m. in the Community Room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue. Please note starting time is later than usual.
Along with Ted Rosenthal will be Martin Wind on bass and Tim Horner on drums. The performance includes jazz standards, jazz interpretations of The Great American Songbook, jazz interpretations of classical themes, Gershwin, and Ted Rosenthal’s original compositions.

Ted Rosenthal actively tours worldwide with his trio, as a soloist, and has performed with many jazz greats, including Gerry Mulligan, Art Farmer, Phil Woods, Bob Brookmeyer, and James Moody. Rosenthal is artistic director of Jazz at the Riverdale Y and previously was artistic director of Jazz at Dicapo Theatre, both in New York City. He has also performed with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, and Jon Faddis and the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band. Active in jazz education, he is on the faculty at Manhattan School of Music, where he also served on the Board of Trustees and received the Presidential Medal for Distinguished Faculty Service. He also teaches at The Juilliard School. In addition, he presents jazz clinics throughout the world, often in conjunction with his touring.

This concert was arranged by the Music Advisory Committee, now in its 48th year. MAC is co-chaired by founding member Gabe Chieco and Michele Ganz, and includes members Mary Dehn and Estelle Pace. This all volunteer committee of Great Neck residents represents a wide range of musical experience and performance.
Great Neck School District residents have priority for seating. Please arrive 15 minutes early for preferred seating.

Simple Happiness: 52 Easy Ways to Lighten Up

Join motivational speaker Jim Ryan when he speaks about his book, “Simple Happiness: 52 Easy Ways to Lighten Up,” and eight characteristics of happy people on Monday, June 4 at 7 p.m. in the Community Room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue.

Ryan is an accomplished guitarist and singer and his musical interludes serve to solidify the concepts presented. He is the founder and president of Jim Ryan Talks, an organization dedicated to the cultivation and development of each individual’s potential for living a life full of joy, fulfillment and success. He has appeared on numerous radio and TV shows and has been featured in TV interviews including an interview with “The God Squad.”

Books will be available for purchase and signing.

Pioneering American Modernist Georgia O’Keeffe
visual art lecture presented by Thomas Germano at Main

Thomas Germano will present a visual art lecture on Georgia O’Keeffe on Tuesday, June 5 at 2 p.m. in the Community Room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue.

Pioneering American modernist Georgia O’Keeffe (1887–1986) conveyed a distinct sense of place with innovative depictions of her surroundings, from stark New Mexican landscapes to New York cityscapes. Yet flowers and plants were subjects that engaged O’Keeffe throughout her career. Thomas Germano lectures on the artist’s career and her current exhibition at the New York Botanical Gardens.

Thomas Germano is an artist and art professor at Farmingdale State College, SUNY. He teaches painting, drawing and art history. He has exhibited his art throughout the United States and abroad and his work is in numerous public and private collections.

West Egg Book Club at Station

The next West Egg book discussion will be about “A Gentleman in Moscow” by Amor Towles on Tuesday, June 5 at 7 p.m. in the Station Branch, 26 Great Neck Road (second level), above Best Market. Amor Towles’ novel about a man who is ordered to spend the rest of his life inside a luxury hotel.

Wednesday Matinee Film at Main

The next Wednesday Matinee at Main, a World War II thriller about the evacuation of 400,000 Allied troops from the French city of Dunkirk before Nazi forces can take hold, will be shown on Wednesday, June 6 at 2 p.m. at the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue.

Blood Pressure Screenings at Station

Have your blood pressure checked by a clinical nurse from St. Francis Hospital, free of charge on Thursday, June 7 between 12 and 2 p.m. at the Station Branch, 26 Great Neck Road (second level), above Best Market, Gardens at Great Neck Plaza.

English as a Second Language Conversation Class with Lisa Greenwald at Main

Join Lisa Greenwald for an ESL conversation class on Friday, June 8 from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Small Multipurpose Room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue.

Lisa began an ESL conversation class last year at the Parkville Branch of the Great Neck Library, and the Manhasset Public Library, focusing on conversation skills while incorporating correct grammar and pronunciation. No registration required.

Project Independence at Parkville

The Project Independence Social Group will meet on Thursday June 7 at 11:30 a.m., and the Men’s Group meets on Friday, June 8 at 10:30 a.m. at the Parkville Branch, 10 Campbell Street (off Lakeville Road), New Hyde Park.

Project Independence provides services and opportunities for seniors that enable them to live independently while maintaining socially active and healthy lives, including help with health related issues, caregiver support, transportation needs for shopping and doctor’s appointments, food and nutrition, and access to benefit and financial assistance.
