Great Neck Library Budget Vote

The Budget Vote for the 2018/2019 Great Neck Library Budget will be held on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. at four polling locations:

• E.M. Baker School (69 Baker Hill Rd)
• Lakeville School (47-27 Jayson Ave)
• Saddle Rock School (10 Hawthorne La)
• South High School (341 Lakeville Rd)

Voter Registration Information:
If you have voted in any school or general election since 2014, you are already registered to vote. Residents must be 18 years of age or older, a citizen of the United States, and have lived in the district for at least 30 days. To find your polling location, go to https://nb.findmypollplace.com/greatneckufsd/ and enter your town and street name. For more information, call (516) 441-4020 on school days.

Great Neck Library seeking prospective candidates for Board of Trustees and Nominating Committee

Take the opportunity to participate in the process that largely determines the services and programs that the Great Neck Library offers to the community. Consider running for a position on the Board of Trustees or Nominating Committee, and be a part of the future of the Library.

The next Great Neck Library Election will be held on Monday, Oct. 29, 2018. There will be seven seats expiring in January 2019. Four of these seats are on the Board of Trustees (Robert Schaufeld, Joel Marcus, as well as the remaining term for the seat currently held by Josie Pizer (2021) and the remaining term for the recently vacated seat held by Francine Ferrante Krupski (2020). Three seats are on the Nominating Committee (Donald Panetta and Howard Esterces, as well as the remaining term for the seat currently vacated by Sam Gottlieb (2021).

Any nominee for a position on the Board of Trustees or the Nominating Committee must be a member of the Great Neck Library Association or a registered voter with the Nassau County Board of Elections by the Record Date of Oct. 1, 2018.

Board of Trustees Meeting at Lakeville

The next regular meeting of the Board of Trustees will be held on Monday, May 14 at 8 p.m. at the Lakeville Branch, 475 Great Neck Road. All are welcome. Contact the Library at 466-8055, or check the Library website to confirm that there has been no change in meeting date, time or location.

Tickets Available for CLUE: The Musical at Levels Teen Center at Main

Tickets become available Monday, May 14 for the Levels Teen Center’s spring 2018 theatre production, “CLUE: The Musical.” Tickets are free of charge and are intended to guarantee seating. They are available at the Circulation Desks of all Great Neck Library locations, while they last.

Levels, the Library’s cultural center for teenagers established in 1974 presents several fully-staged theatrical productions a year. Levels’ productions are traditionally directed, produced and performed by students in seventh grade through college-age.

“CLUE: The Musical” is an all-singing, all-dancing version of the classic Parker Brothers board game, featuring the world’s best-known murder suspects – Professor Plum, Miss Scarlet, Colonel Mustard, Mr. Green, Mrs. Peacock and Mrs. White. It’s also an interactive theatre experience where the audience is invited to solve the mystery of who killed Mr. Boddy, in what room and with what weapon. With 216 possible endings, it’s a different show every night.

Performances of CLUE: The Musical will be held Thursday, Friday and Saturday, May 31, June 1 and June 2 at 8 p.m. in the Levels Teen Center on the lower level of the Great Neck Library’s Main Building, 159 Bayview Avenue in Great Neck.

Tai Chi facilitated by Joseph Panico at Main

Tai Chi classes will be held on Saturdays, May 12 and 19 and June 2, 9, and 16 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Community Room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue.

Registration fee is $40 for the entire series of eight classes. In-person registration only (cash, check or money order made payable to Great Neck Library).

Tai Chi is an internal form of martial art that is practiced for health and self- defense. Incorporating breathing with slow and fluid movements, the exercise connects the internal focus of the mind with the external control of the body. Comfortable clothes and shoes are recommended.

Joseph Panico has been practicing martial arts for more than 15 years. He began his Tai Chi training in 1997 at Red Dragon Kung Fu Center.

The Life and Career of Tony Bennett presented by Jack Schnur at Main

Jack Schnur will give a multi-media presentation about the life and career of Tony Bennett as a singer and painter on Tuesday, May 15 at 2:00 p.m. in the Community Room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue.

Featured in the program will be Tony singing some of his biggest hits including “Because of You, I Left my Heart in San Francisco,” “Just in Time,” “Rags to Riches” and more. It will also include Tony himself speaking about his career and singing duets with Lady Gaga, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Elton John, Barbra Streisand and many others.

Jack Schnur was a videotape editor for CBS for 30 years. He has created and continues to create multimedia programs on numerous legendary entertainers.

Allies in Wellness with Librarian Mimi Rabizadeh at Main

Attend this new study group led by Librarian Mimi Rabizadeh, focusing on a 360-degree perspective on wellness. Discussions will focus on four elements of wellness: physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. The next meeting is on Tuesday, May 15 at 7 p.m. in the Large Multipurpose Room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue. GNL Tech Squad at All Library Locations

Teen volunteers will help you learn how to use your iPad or tablet, social media, Microsoft Office, smartphone apps, and more. Bring in specific questions and issues, or just learn the basics of technology. No registration required. Tuesdays at all Great Neck Library locations from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m.

Wednesday Matinee Film at Main

The next Wednesday Matinee at Main, about two coworkers who discover a secret classified experiment in a government laboratory, will be shown on Wednesday, May 16 at 2 p.m. at the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue.

Mindfulness Meditation facilitated by Carolyn Carpentiere at Main

Carolyn Carpentiere will facilitate Mindfulness Meditation on Wednesday, May 16 from
7:15 to 8 p.m. in the Community Room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue.
Meditation is a practice that strengthens our focus and attention, as well as
releases stress to stay healthy. Open to all skill levels. Please bring a mat or use our chairs. Carolyn received her 200-hour yoga certification at Long Island Yoga School in 2009 and has continued to work in and study many other holistic solutions to health including Mindfulness Meditation and Reiki.

The next encore film, about two coworkers who discover a secret classified experiment in a government laboratory, will be shown on Thursday, May 17 at 2 p.m. at the Station Branch, 26 Great Neck Road (2nd level), Gardens at Great Neck Plaza, above Best Market.

ESL with Lisa Greenwald at Main

Join Lisa Greenwald for an ESL conversation class on Friday, May 18 from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Small Multipurpose Room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue.

Lisa began an ESL conversation class last year at the Parkville Branch of the Great Neck Library, and the Manhasset Public Library, focusing on conversation skills while incorporating correct grammar and pronunciation. No registration required.

Writer Within Workshop at Main facilitated by Lynda Aron

Access your authentic voice and explore the power of imagination, self-expression and storytelling at this writing workshop facilitated by Lynda Aron on Friday, May 18 from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Large Multipurpose Room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue. Sharing is encouraged but not required.

Published author Lynda Aron has taught writing workshops and book discussion groups for the past thirty years. She taught in high schools, universities, community centers such as Gilda’s Club in Manhattan, her salon, and hospitals worldwide.
