Earlier in March, 16 members of the Wheatley DECA club traveled to Rochester, N.Y. to compete in the DECA States competition. In order for students to qualify for States, they had to be one of the top performers at the regional level.

During the state competition, students competed in events such as business role plays, where they were given a scenario and had to determine how they would proceed if they were in charge of the company and answer questions from the judges who are taking the role of potential investors.

The competition consisted of over 2,000 DECA students from all over New York State competing for one of the coveted spots in the National level competition.

The Wheatley DECA club was victorious, with seven members bringing home multiple medals for their accomplishments!

Starting with sophomore Frederick Lin and junior Matthew Cornacchia, who both placed in the top ten for their scores on the Entrepreneurship & Business Management Exams as well as sophomore
Saad Haroon, who took home two medals for his performance on his event role play and placed in the top 10 overall for the Principles of Finance Events. Seniors, Matthew Kreitzer and Brooke Schwartz, also brought home two medals for their performance on their role play and placed in the top ten overall in the Entrepreneurship Team Event.

Wheatley’s big winners were juniors, Brandon Behar and Jason Koty. They placed in the top ten for their performance in the Sports and Entertainment Role Play Event, and took third place overall! This award earned them a spot at the DECA International Career Development Conference National competition, which will take place in Orlando this April.
