Fire engulfs Mineola homes, businesses

A four-alarm fire damaged or destroyed multiple apartments and businesses on Main Street near Second Avenue in Mineola on Sunday evening.

According to police, the Nassau County Police Department and Mineola Fire Department responded to a 911 call at 7:55 p.m. for a vehicle fire in a garage at 101 Main St.

When emergency responders arrived at the scene, the fire had already spread to nearby shops with apartments above.

Twelve local fire departments, consisting of approximately 200 firefighters, assisted the Mineola Fire Department in putting out the flames. Arson and bomb squad detectives, fire marshals and the Village of Mineola Building Department were present as well.

It took approximately five hours for firefighters to put out the blaze.

Two firefighters were treated and evaluated at the scene for signs of exhaustion, the Police Department reported.

The Red Cross offered assistance to approximately 15 displaced residents.

The investigation is ongoing, according to police.
