From The Desk of Paul Ehrbar: Our way of honoring our medical workers, 1st responders

The Island Now
Village of Williston Park Mayor Paul Ehrbar.

To honor our health-care workers, doctors, nurses, fire departments, rescue squads, ambulance workers, all first responders, and all essential workers, emergency sirens will sound at 7 p.m. each evening; signaling the end of the typical 7 a.m.-7 p.m. shift that health care providers often work. When you hear the horns, please take a moment, say a prayer, and think about how fortunate we are to have so many dedicated and courageous men and women on the frontlines of this battle.

Also, I ask all to go to their front door, porch, window at this time and applaud these individuals by clapping to demonstrate thanks for the difficult tasks that they have each and every day. However, do not gather with your neighbors if participating in this event.

As many are aware, this next week is expected to a difficult one, as it is believed that Nassau County will be hitting the “peak” of this dreaded disease. It is important to stay dedicated and disciplined to follow guidelines established by the CDC.

Most importantly, comply with social distancing, washing hands frequently, and avoid touching your face. Remember to stay in contact (by phone, internet, etc.) with family, friends, and neighbors especially, those home alone.

Our prayers go out to those families who have lost a loved one or who have been impacted by Covid-19.

A special thanks to Trustee Carr his wife Cathy and children Veronica, Liam, Joe, and Rusty for putting together the Easter Bunny drive through Williston Park and East Williston.

The effort took all day Saturday to organize and put the Easter Bunny’s trailer together and six hours of drive time throughout the area.

Also, I want to thank Chiefs Schnall, Duggan and former Chief Tony Gagliardi who led the parade. Residents, young and old enjoyed the event, watching from their front doors, opened windows, and standing on their front laws. From my observation, all maintained social distancing while the Bunny rode by.

A heart-warming story took place in the mists of this virus saga. Anna Fortunato, a former Herricks School district employee and mother in law of Village Clerk Julie Kain’s sister, Mrs. Fortunato Contracted COVID-19 in March, which resulted in her hospitalization.

Mrs. Fortunato is 90 years old and a resident of an assisted living home. Her condition worsened as she spent time in the hospital. She was given the anti-malaria drug and she began to improve.

Doctors are not sure whether the medication played a role in her recovery, however, she has been released from the hospital and is comfortably residing back in the assisted living residence.

I’d like to wish all a Happy Passover and Happy Easter.

This week is the celebration of Passover and Sunday is the celebration of Easter. Major family events, that usually take place, will be greatly impacted, as families will be unable to attend religious services and unable to hold traditional family gatherings.

While many complain about the excessive use of the internet, this medium will be put to good use during this time, as families can be together through facetime, skype, etc.
