The Village of Mineola amended its municipal code to restrict hours for construction work last week.

The “Peace and Good Order” chapter of the code was amended by the Board of Trustees last Wednesday to define hours for beginning and ending work at residential and commercial properties.

“We’ve heard many times over the years from residents about being woken up early from people being bothered by contractors,” Mayor Scott Strauss said. “We don’t won’t you woken up at 6 o’clock in the morning and there was nothing in the books.”

No residential work will be permitted before 8 a.m. Monday through Friday and before 9 a.m. Saturday, Sunday and holidays. No commercial or industrial work can begin before 7 a.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sunday and holidays. All work in the village will be unlawful after 6 p.m.

Emergency construction exemptions can be sought from the Building Department.

Work includes interior and exterior excavation, demolition, repairs, painting, installation of equipment, electrical and plumbing work or anything similar, according to village officials.

Residents and commercial contractors will be made aware of the new construction hours when receiving permits from the Building Department, Strauss said.

The village will not send code enforcers to every work site, but rely on residents to file noise complaints to the village if issues arise, he said.
