Police said a Mineola man was arrested last Tuesday after he threatened a woman and punched a police officer.

According to the police, Peter Belton, 29, was standing in a Mineola Boulevard parking lot around 2 a.m. last Tuesday when he told a stranger he was going to stab her and lunged toward her.

The Mineola woman, 52, called the police after distancing herself from Belton.

When police arrived, Belton allegedly became combative when ordered by an officer to stop walking. According to the report, Belton struck the officer in his face with a closed fist. While the officer was attempting to detain Belton, who was flailing his arms, both men fell to the ground.

Belton was detained with the help of additional officers.

The officer Belton allegedly punched suffered pain, swelling, bruising and lacerations to his face and both hands, police say. Belton’s only injury was to his elbow. Both men were transported to the hospital and treated.

Belton was charged with third-degree menacing, second-degree assault and resisting arrest. He was to be arraigned when medically practical.
