William Henry Cassidy, owner and funeral director of Cassidy Funeral Home in Mineola, died last Wednesday. He was 73 years old.
Cassidy, of East Williston and Mineola, was a fourth-generation New York state licensed funeral director for over five decades and had been operating in Mineola for over 40 years.
He was born on May 19, 1948, in Queens and grew up in New Hyde Park, according to his son William. A graduate of the Niagara University College of Business in 1970, Cassidy served in the Navy aboard the aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy during the Vietnam War.
In 1974, the Cassidy family purchased what was previously known as the James Newman Funeral Home in Mineola. William H. Cassidy and his son William J. Cassidy, a fifth-generation funeral director, operated the funeral home together since 2009 with William J. Cassidy’s wife, Susan, who is also a licensed funeral director.
Cassidy was a member of the Knights of Columbus as a past grand knight, Catholic War Veterans of America and the financial committee of Corpus Christi Church in Mineola, according to an obituary on the funeral home’s website.
Cassidy is survived by his wife, Diane, and his children Lorraine, Eileen, William and Michael. He is also survived by his siblings Margaret, Patricia, Joseph, James and Elizabeth, as well as five grandchildren.
Cassidy was to be buried at Calverton National Cemetery, according to the obituary.
