Wit & whim, a lifestyle store that supports a different nonprofit organization monthly with “gifts that give back,” held their kickoff cocktail event on July 10 to support Growing Love Community Garden of Manorhaven.

Founded by three Port Washington moms and expanded by a volunteer committee of friends, the mission of this grassroots initiative is to connect people to healthy food, nature and each other. The newly launched garden, which includes a professionally landscaped garden and hardscape features, has been a huge success.

“I knew before the garden even began that it would be wonderful because Erika, Michele, and Nicole are real dynamos and had every step of the project so well planned out,” Manorhaven Mayor Jim Avena said. “But the final result is even more spectacular than I imagined. It is such an honor to be involved in this great community project that turned an unused part of the Manorhaven Nature Preserve into something residents will enjoy for years to come.”

Over 46 planting beds and five educational beds are utilized by local families and organizations such as the Senior Citizen Center, Girl Scouts of America and SEPTA.  Plans for a Phase Two garden to include a memorial tree garden, perennial pollinator garden, and a sensory garden, to name a few, are currently underway.

Please show your support for Growing Love Community Garden by shopping at wit & whim located at 6 Carlton Ave. in Port Washington through the month of July.
