A middle-aged woman was struck by a car near the corner of Middle Neck Road and Grace Avenue in Great Neck Plaza on Tuesday afternoon, fire and police officials said, leaving her with nonlife-threatening injuries.
Vigilant Fire Chief Josh Charry said units responded to a 4:09 p.m. call of a driver striking a pedestrian and were on the scene by 4:11 p.m. Nassau County police officers were also on the site.
“Responders found a middle-aged female complaining of head, shoulder and hip pain from being struck by a car,” Charry said. “The patient was assessed, treated and transported to North Shore University Hospital by Vigilant Fire Company ambulance.”
Nassau County police confirmed that the woman, whom they could not name due to privacy laws, was “conscious and breathing” and transported to a local hospital with “non-life threatening injuries.”
The driver remained on the scene, police said.
Asked if the area is particularly dangerous, a public information officer said, “It’s a high traffic area.”
A local business owner, who did not want to be identified, said she saw the woman crossing the street and that it was “not the first time” someone was hurt in the area.
A 2017 report from the Tri-State Transportation Campaign, which analyzed 2014-2016 accident data from the New York State Department of Transportation, found Middle Neck Road – particularly in the Great Neck Plaza area – to be a “Nassau crash hotspot.”
There were at least 20 collisions with a pedestrian or cyclist just off of or along Middle Neck Road that resulted in injuries from 2014 to 2016, according to the report.
