A construction worker’s legs were severed below his knees when a large steel plate struck him and threw him down a hole in Roslyn Heights early Wednesday, according to the Nassau County Police Department.

The victim, 39, was transported to a local hospital and is in stable condition, police said.

The incident occurred at 8:05 a.m. around Corncrib Lane and Locust Lane.

The hole that the worker fell in was about 10 feet deep, the police reported. Officers reached the victim in the hole and applied tourniquets to control the bleeding.
